Did anyone see those fighter jets flying over New York Harbor on 5/30/08? If so, any ideas on why?

While on a trip to Buono Beach on Staten Island, I saw a pair of military fighter jets flying east to west over the Narrows at 10:11 A.M. Despite their distance of a maximum of one mile, I couldn’t see any markings on the planes. They were also flying at supersonic speeds, which was noted by the sonic booms several hundred feet behind their location, which is prohibited that low over a populated area. Between 10 and 20 minutes later, a similar pair of seemingly identical planes flew in the opposite direction in a similar formation. For the next several hours, several helicopters, some military, flew over the area. When I got home, I looked at pictures of every plane of every branch of the U.S. military, none of which matched exactly. The plane that came closest was an F-15C Eagle; however, the stabilizer fins were nearly perpendicular to the mystery planes, differing from the F-15’s, and the wingtips of the mystery planes were highly rounded. Did anyone else see it? If so, any ideas?
These planes weren’t high up. I’d say they were only about 1,500 feet up or so. This was just to clarify since people must have interpreted what I originally said as them being a mile up. Fleet Week ended on Wednesday and it was Friday, so that would be odd. The planes flying back the way they came makes a departure impossible. They definitely weren’t F-18’s, as the boxes on each wing (I think they’re air intakes?) were much smaller than the F-18’s, if they even had any.
To Victor Ellis: like with the F-15, the F-22 seems very close, but there is one small difference. The stabilizer fins were thinner on the plane I saw, in that the measure of the angles of the corners at the top of the fins were less than the Raptor’s. That said, I’d like to emphasize the fact that I asked for only people who saw the planes to give ideas.
